South-East Lower Saxony awarded as "HyExpert" region
The region of South-East Lower Saxony has been accepted by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) into the "HyExpert" category of hydrogen regions in Germany. This means that an application from the SüdOstNiedersachsen project office and the district of Helmstedt (as the lead regional authority) has been successfully decided. In the HyExperts category, funding of up to 400,000 euros is provided for the winning regions.
As part of the HyExpert funding, a holistic concept for the production and use of green hydrogen is to be developed in the region of South-East Lower Saxony. The region is facing the major challenges of an overarching structural change, which is characterised by the coal phase-out, the mobility turnaround and the transformation of steel production.
Gerhard Radeck, District Administrator of the Helmstedt district, comments: "Our region has particular strengths in the areas of mobility, research and production. The use of hydrogen technologies is intended to make these more climate-friendly." With an integrative approach, a model region is to be created that is characterised by the phase-out of fossil fuels, the use of alternative drives in mobility andCO2-neutral energy-intensive production. The outstanding goal is the development of economically viable hydrogen value chains.
The submitted project application received a total of 58 letters of support from business, science, administration and politics, including the cities of Braunschweig, Wolfsburg and Salzgitter, as well as the districts of Goslar, Gifhorn, Peine and Wolfenbüttel.
