Hydrogen in the cross-border transport sector

Digital workshop

1 April 2022, 10:00 - 12:00 hrs

The European Union and thus also the Netherlands and Germany are facing an enormous transformation process with the phase-out of fossil fuels and the massive reduction of emissions of climate-damaging gases, especially in the transport sector. In this transition, the use of hydrogen in the multimodal transport sector will be of particular importance, as only green hydrogen and electricity from renewable energies fully meet the European and national definition of climate neutrality. With more than 11,000 heavy goods vehicles per day crossing the German-Dutch border in the project area via the main traffic routes, the existing train and canal connections and numerous companies from the transport sector, the regional potentials are high.

Building on the major hydrogen projects and activities that have been established on both sides of the border in recent years, the NorthH2West project will conduct a cross-border target group analysis describing the opportunities for extensive German-Dutch cooperation in the field of hydrogen in the transport sector. This should create the conditions for a connection between the two regions and for far-reaching, cross-border innovations and investments. In order to realise this connection, the H2 Region Emsland would like to discuss the cornerstones, necessities and challenges on the basis of the study results and present the concrete further steps.
