A 10-megawatt electrolyzer is to be built at the port in Brake!

Lhyfe builds 10 megawatt electrolyzer in Brake, Lower Saxony

The construction of an electrolyzer with a capacity of 10 megawatts will begin in Brake, Lower Saxony, in February 2024. The project will be implemented by hydrogen producer Lhyfe on the NiedersachsenPorts site at the port of Brake and is to be embedded in the local value chain, particularly in the mobility and industrial sectors. According to Lhyfe, the 10 MW plant will be able to produce produce up to 1,150 tons of green hydrogen per year.

The development of electrolysis capacities is crucial for a successful hydrogen ramp-up. The French company Lhyfe is active as a hydrogen producer and supplier in 12 European countries and now also wants to produce green hydrogen in Brake, Lower Saxony.

The renewable electricity required for this is to be sourced from various producers via power purchase agreements (PPAs) from wind and photovoltaic plants. Lhyfe expects to supply the first hydrogen to various customers for industrial and mobility applications from 2025 .

The hydrogen produced will also be fed into the local hydrogen network. In this way, industrial companies that are connected to the hydrogen network via pipeline can benefit from the electrolysis capacity on site. The project will also make an important contribution to the decarbonization of the industrial port complex and maritime transport in the region.

Groundbreaking ceremony on February 1, 2024 in Brake 

The implementation of the project is already in full swing, with construction work in the port of Brake set to begin in early 2024. In this context, the symbolic ground-breaking ceremony took place in Brake on February 1. Further information can be found here.

    Statkraft plans to build a 10-megawatt electrolyzer in Emden, which will produce green hydrogen for heavy goods vehicles in particular.

    Statkraft plans to commission the "Emden E1" electrolysis plant in Emden in 2026 to produce green hydrogen. The electrolyzer will have an output of 10 megawatts and produce around 200 kilograms of hydrogen per hour. The green hydrogen is to be used in the regional transport sector.

    The planned Emden E1 electrolyzer is to be integrated into Statkraft's existing site infrastructure in Emden. The company already operates a biomass and a gas-fired power plant in Emden. The aim is to use the locally produced green hydrogen in the regional transport sector, particularly for heavy goods vehicles. The new electrolyzer with a capacity of 10 megawatts will produce around 200 kilograms of hydrogen from renewable energies every hour. This could power around 100 hydrogen-powered trucks for a year.

    It is planned that the first green hydrogen will be produced as early as 2026. The necessary technical planning work for the electrolyzer has been completed for this purpose. The application documents for the associated approval procedure were submitted to the relevant authorities in Emden and Oldenburg in March 2023. A decision is expected in the coming months.

    During the current planning phase, not only the technical but also the economic feasibility of the project is being examined. Statkraft will make the final investment decision once the planning has been completed and approval has been granted by the authorities. If this is successful, the first construction work could begin at the end of 2024 and the first green hydrogen could be produced at the Emden site as early as 2026. If successful, Statkraft plans to expand the electrolysis capacity at the site to up to 200 MW in a second project.

    Funding from the national innovation program for fuel cell and hydrogen technology has been applied for the Emden E1 project.

      GrInHy2.0 - Green Industrial Hydrogen

      As part of the "GrInHy2.0" project, Salzgitter AG and its partners are building and operating the world's largest high-temperature electrolyser. By the end of 2022, the electrolyser is expected to produce around 100 tonnes of hydrogen. Together with other sub-projects, the project is expected to make a significant contribution to reducing emissions in steel production.

      News (15.12.2023): Research cooperation between Salzgitter AG and Sunfire GmbH enters third round

      As part of the "Green Industrial Hydrogen" (GrInHy) research cooperation, the industrial use of high-temperature electrolysis in steel production is being investigated in more detail in Salzgitter. In the GrInHy2.0 project, a SOEC electrolyzer has already been built which, according to Salzgitter AG, has achieved a record efficiency of 84%.

      After more than 19,00 operating hours and 190 tons of hydrogen produced, two new test modules with an electrolysis capacity of 540 kW are now being integrated into the existing infrastructure as part of the follow-up project "GrInHy3.0". These are even more robust and efficient, meaning that the plant will produce around 16.5 kilograms of hydrogen per hour in future. The hydrogen produced will be used, among other things, for the direct reduction of iron ore in Salzgitter AG's µDral test plant. Commissioning of the new modules is scheduled for 2024.

      The project, which will run until 2027, is being implemented together with the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. Read more

      In the GrInHy2.0 project, a high-temperature electrolyser (HTE) with a nominal output of 720 kWel and a throughput of 200 m³ of hydrogen per hour is being built. By the end of 2022, the electrolyser is expected to run for at least 13,000 hours and produce a total of about 100 tonnes of hydrogen. The plant also uses already available industrial waste heat from Salzgitter AG.

      The green hydrogen produced is to be used in direct reduction on the one hand and also for the annealing processes, for which grey hydrogen is currently still used. The three interlocking sub-projects of Salzgitter AG are called SALCOS, WindH2 and GrInHy2.0.

        The Mittelplate oil field is the most productive oil field in Germany and has been operated by Wintershall Dea for 35 years. The field is located in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea, which is why it is planned to operate it in the most environmentally friendly way possible. In the H2Move project, the Mittelplate Drilling and Production Island's supply ships are to be converted to hydrogen hybrid drives. The hydrogen required for this is to be produced in aCO2-neutral manner in Cuxhaven.

        News (15.11.2023): 2-megawatt electrolyzer now producing green hydrogen for shipping

        On November 15, a 2-megawatt electrolysis plant was put into operation in Cuxhaven, which is now producing green hydrogen for shipping. The green hydrogen is to be used in the H2Move project, as part of which supply vessels on the Mittelplate drilling and production island will be converted to hydrogen hybrid propulsion. Turneo Managing Director Jochen Kaufholt, Tobias Moldenhauer (EWE), Robert Frimpong (Wintershall Dea Deutschland), Cuxhaven's Lord Mayor Uwe Santjer and Lower Saxony's Minister of Economic Affairs Olaf Lies were among those present at the official commissioning of the electrolysis plant and the first converted supply vessel Coastal Liberty.         News (14.09.2023): Electrolysis plant is in assembly/commissioning!

        The 2 MW electrolysis plant was delivered to Cuxhaven just under a month ago. Following successful installation and commissioning, it will be possible to achieve a production capacity of up to 860 kg H2/day. At the filling station, which has also been installed, the hydrogen will be filled into bundles of cylinders and transported onto ships, thus protecting the Wadden Sea with the help of a fuel cell.

        An electrolysis plant with a capacity of 2 megawatts is currently being built in Cuxhaven for the production of green hydrogen. This is to be used by the supply ships on Mittelplate Drilling and Production Island. In addition, storage tanks with different pressure levels are being built in Cuxhaven to enable the refueling processes to be carried out as quickly as possible.

        Once the plant has been completed, it is planned to transport the hydrogen produced in Cuxhaven to the Mittelplate ships in so-called tank containers under a pressure of up to 350 bar. The hydrogen will then be fed from the containers to a fuel cell, which will generate electricity and ultimately drive the electric motor of the Mittelplate vessels.

        According to Wintershall Dea, the four supply vessels in the Mittelplate fleet cover a combined distance of about 12,500 nautical miles annually. The first supply vessel to be converted is the Coastal Liberty. This ship alone consumes around 275,000 liters of diesel per year and has the potential to save up to 700 tons ofCO2 annually.

        The development and implementation of the onshore supply infrastructure is being implemented by Turneo GmbH, a joint venture between Hamburg-based Karlsson GmbH and EWE Gasspeicher GmbH from Oldenburg. The company EnTec Industrial Services GmbH had previously successfully completed a feasibility study in Cuxhaven. The project will ultimately also lay the foundation for the development of a regional hydrogen infrastructure in Cuxhaven.

        The "CHESS" project is making progress: on August 18, the legal framework was created for the construction of a solar park in Elsfleth in the district of Wesermarsch. The plant is to be built on an area of around 281 hectares and will have an output of 300 megawatt peak. According to plans, the solar park will play an important role in the CHESS project, which Uniper is implementing together with EWE. Read more

        Im Rahmen des Vorhabens CHESS soll über das vorhandene Stromnetz regional produzierter Strom aus Wind und Sonne zur grünen Wasserstofferzeugung in einen 30-Megawatt-Elektrolyseur geleitet werden. Beim Elektrolyse-Verfahren wird Wasser mit Hilfe von Strom in Wasserstoff aufgespalten. Nutzt man dafür grünen Strom, entsteht grüner Wasserstoff. Dieser Wasserstoff kann anschließend über das Wasserstoff-Kernnetz direkt zu den Verbrauchern transportiert werden.

        Unipers Standort Huntorf kann zu einem wichtigen Standort für die Wasserstoffproduktion im Norden Niedersachsens werden, da er von der bestehenden Infrastruktur des seit 1978 betriebenen Druckluftspeichers von Uniper, wie z.B. der Netzanschluss, profitiert. Durch die Anbindung an das neue deutsche Wasserstoff-Kernnetz werden die Absatzmöglichkeiten für die Industrie geschaffen.

        Das Huntorf-Projekt unterstützt die Vision von Uniper, die Energiesysteme zu dekarbonisieren und den zentralen Herausforderungen in Bezug auf die Variabilität der erneuerbaren Energien zu begegnen. Das Ausbaupotenzial des Standorts wird derzeit auf bis zu 300 MW geschätzt, wobei sich die einzelnen Ausbaustufen auf den Wasserstoffabsatz ausrichten.

          According to the National Hydrogen Strategy, German hydrogen demand is to be met by a combination of in-house production and the import of hydrogen from other countries. In the Green Wilhelmshaven project, this idea is taken up by enabling the import of hydrogen by means of ammonia on a large scale, but at the same time also producing green hydrogen by electrolysis on site. This will build up capacities that together could cover 10-20 % of the hydrogen demand for the whole of Germany in 2030.

          News (23.04.2024): Salzgitter AG and Uniper SE sign preliminary agreement for the supply and purchase of green hydrogen

          Salzgitter AG and Uniper announced today that the two companies have signed a preliminary agreement for the supply and purchase of green hydrogen. This involves the delivery of up to 20,000 tons of green hydrogen per year to Salzgitter; according to current plans, the delivery could take place from 2028. The green hydrogen is to be produced in a 200 megawatt electrolyser on the site of Uniper's former hard coal-fired power plant in Wilhelmshaven. Read more

          News (06.09.2023): Solar park in Wilhelmshaven (17 MWp) to enable production of green hydrogen

          Uniper is currently building a solar park with a capacity of 17 MWp in Wilhelmshaven. The park is to be connected to the existing grid infrastructure at a Uniper site, which will also enable the production of green hydrogen at the site. The solar park thus joins the other activities in the "Green Wilhelmshaven" project. Learn more

          Sub-project: "Green Wilhelmshaven Terminal" 

          At the heart of Uniper's project is an import terminal for green ammonia in Wilhelmshaven - including a so-called "ammonia cracker" that enables the conversion of ammonia into green hydrogen and nitrogen. Green ammonia can be used well to transport hydrogen, as it has a high energy density as well as good storability.

          Before the green ammonia can be converted into hydrogen in Germany, however, it must first be produced in the exporting country by catalytic synthesis from nitrogen and green hydrogen. Then, due to its good transportability, it can be shipped, for example, by ship to Wilhelmshaven and finally converted back into green hydrogen in the ammonia cracker (in the NH3 cracking plant). However, the production of the ammonia before transport and the reconversion to hydrogen in Germany mean losses that reduce the overall efficiency. Due to its good transport properties, however, the green ammonia can make a decisive contribution to significantly increasing the security of supply of green hydrogen. The plant in Wilhelmshaven is to be the first scaled-up plant of its kind in Germany.

          Sub-project: "Green Wilhelmshaven Electrolyser"

          In addition, an electrolysis plant of around one gigawatt is planned in the "Green Wilhelmshaven" project. The green hydrogen produced will be used in particular to supply local industry, but can also be fed into the grid. Together with the hydrogen production in the "ammonia cracker", according to plans, 300,000 tons of hydrogen can eventually be produced - which corresponds to around 10-20 % of Germany's planned hydrogen demand in 2030.

          In the "Green Wilhelmshaven" project, the region's infrastructural advantages can also be exploited, since the salt caverns in Etzel or Krummhörn enable the large-scale storage of hydrogen.
