ENaQ: Energetisches Nachbarschaftsquartier Fliegerhorst Oldenburg (abgeschlossen)

In the ENaQ project (Energetisches Nachbarschaftsquartier Fliegerhorst Oldenburg), a climate-neutral neighbourhood is being built on a former air base in Oldenburg, where smart and sustainable solutions for energy supply and mobility are to be used. The energy demand will be largely covered by locally generated renewable energies - green hydrogen will be used as a storage medium and for mobility.

In the Fliegerhorst neighbourhood, the sectors of electricity, heat and mobility are to be coupled in an exemplary manner and a smart, climate-neutral neighbourhood is to be created. Hydrogen will also be used - on the one hand to secure the neighbourhood's energy supply, but also to demonstrate the practical benefits of hydrogen technologies (e.g. in the mobility sector).

Hydrogen is to be used as a storage medium and for reverse power generation, which is why the quarter will be equipped with an electrolyser and a fuel cell. For this purpose, a control system is to be developed at the neighbourhood level in cooperation with project partners, which supports the production, storage and provision of the green hydrogen. The necessary renewable electricity is to be produced in the neighbourhood by photovoltaics or other green electricity sources that may be set up.  

In addition to being used as a storage medium, the green hydrogen will also be made available for a mobile hydrogen tank trailer.

Ultimately, a complete system is to be developed in the neighbourhood that forms a basis for the energy self-sufficiency of the neighbourhood by providing local electricity and green hydrogen.

    COSPEL – CO2-neutrale Sperrmüllsammlung im Emsland (abgeschlossen)

    In Emsland, as part of the project: "COSPEL -CO2-neutral bulky waste collection in Emsland". a waste collection vehicle is being purchased that will be operated 100%CO2-free. For this purpose, green hydrogen is to be used, which will be produced by means of renewable energies. From late autumn 2022, the vehicle will be used on the streets of Lingen and Emsbüren to collect bulky waste.

    The waste management company (AWB) in the Emsland district has the first hydrogen-powered vehicle in use, which saves up to 30 tons of CO2 per year. This corresponds to around 10,000 liters of diesel per year, which is normally required for the bulky waste vehicle. Click here for the press release.

    Within the framework of the project "HyExperts: H2-Region Emsland", the district of Emsland and the H2 Region Emsland are developing an implementable overall concept for the hydrogen region Emsland with a focus on the area of mobility. In the project, concrete implementation projects have already been initiated during the project term 2020 to 2022. Further practical projects will follow with the funding sought under the HyPerformer programme. The COSPEL project is one of the first implementation projects from the HyExperts process: in the late autumn of 2022, the Emsland waste management company will be equipped with a bulky waste vehicle that uses hydrogen as an energy carrier. This should save about 30 tonnes ofCO2 per year.

    Green hydrogen for vehicle operation is already available in the region. With projects such as the E-Gas plant in Werlte, GET H2, Lingen Green Hydrogen or CEC Haren, there are a number of projects in Emsland that can produce or distribute the necessary hydrogen. 

    The pilot project not only forms the basis for the possible conversion of further own fleet vehicles, it also helps to increase the visibility of climate-friendly vehicles among citizens and to demonstrate the benefits of green hydrogen.

    COSPEL is supported within the framework of the National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Innovation Programme (NIP II) with funds from the Federal Ministry of Transport. Those responsible for the project received a funding decision in July 2021. The funding amounts to just under 800,000 euros - the total investment for the acquisition of the vehicle is about one million euros.

    The waste management company (AWB) Emsland was founded in 1995 and is a municipal enterprise of the district which, among other things, is responsible for the collection of bulky waste, where the hydrogen vehicle will be used.

      MITARBEITERQUALIFIZIERUNG FÜR H2 FAHRZEUGE IM LOGISTIKBEREICH (abgeschlossen)

      In Germany, the transport sector is the only sector that has hardly been able to reduce itsCO2 emissions since 1990, which is why a switch to climate-friendly drives is necessary in the future. For larger vehicles such as trucks, commercial vehicles and buses, green hydrogen is to replace fossil fuels. Since the switch to hydrogen vehicles is also accompanied by numerous changes and challenges in vehicle use, the project "Employee qualification for H2 vehicles in the logistics sector" of Allianz für die Region GmbH aims to prepare users of vehicles for the switch - with a variety of learning, training and further education modules.

      Numerous logistics companies, but also municipalities and local authorities, are currently working on converting their fleets to energy-efficient and low-emission vehicles. In the area of larger vehicles, the conversion to green hydrogen is the means of choice to replace fossil fuels.

      For the vehicle users, however, this conversion process results in numerous challenges, both in day-to-day business and in repair and maintenance work. Therefore, the project "Employee qualification for H2 vehicles in the logistics sector" of the Allianz für die Region GmbH identifies the changes in the technical, organisational and business management processes in the company that accompany the conversion to hydrogen vehicles.

      These can affect, for example, the education and training activities of employees, but also the infrastructure as well as work and organisational processes in the company. Therefore, numerous new requirements arise both for employee qualifications and for new learning and teaching content. In close cooperation with partners from workshops and (initial) training institutions, compatible learning, training and further training modules are developed and refined, organisational processes are optimised and modified curricula are prepared in close coordination.

      The project was launched in November 2021 and is funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the state of Lower Saxony. The project will run until 31 March 2023.

        SAVE – UNTERNEHMEN UND BÜRGER BEIM AUFBAU EINER WASSERSTOFFWIRTSCHAFT BETEILIGEN (abgeschlossen)

        One of the prerequisites for the energy transition and the successful development of a hydrogen economy is the support of local communities, businesses and also the local population. In the SAVE project, precisely this support is being promoted in the north of Lower Saxony - in the form of information workshops, advisory services and the presentation of opportunities for participation.

        The main objective of the cooperation project with the Netherlands "SAVE - SAmen Voor de Energietransitie" is to increase the support and participation of local businesses and the population in the expansion of renewable energies and the development of a hydrogen economy. In the border area between northern Lower Saxony and the Netherlands, there are already numerous hydrogen projects and initiatives, but they often exist "detached" from the citizen. The aim is therefore to inform and engage citizens and businesses in building a hydrogen economy and to strengthen interest in hydrogen technologies and innovations.

        To this end, the various actors from the population, the economy and politics are to be better networked - for example, through workshops and training courses for municipalities and companies or advisory services for the population. In addition, best-practice examples are to inform about the diverse opportunities of the transformation and show participation possibilities for citizens, but also for companies. As a result, the project also wants to contribute to increasing regional value creation, developing sustainable business models and increasing the willingness to invest in renewable energies.

        The Nordseeheilbad Borkum GmbH bundles all municipal economic activities of the city of Borkum and is also responsible for supplying the island with electricity, water and heat.

        The Dutch municipality of Am eland is located on the North Sea island of the same name and has around 3,600 inhabitants.

        H2WATT (abgeschlossen) – EINE GRENZÜBERGREIFENDE WASSERSTOFFWIRTSCHAFT AUF DEN FRIESISCHEN INSELN

        The Frisian islands are ideally suited for the generation of renewable electricity due to their natural conditions - and the production and use of green hydrogen on site is also increasingly becoming an important building block in the implementation of the energy transition. The H2Watt project aims to build a cross-border hydrogen economy that features advanced technological developments and knowledge transfer.

        The H2Watt project is being implemented primarily on the islands of Borkum and Ameland. Due to the natural conditions, the Wadden Sea offers optimal conditions for the production of green hydrogen, e.g. with the help of wind power and solar plants as well as by means of the energy from wave and tidal power plants. Due to the exposed location, the supply system can also be considered self-sufficient on the islands.

        The project will analyse and test possibilities for the production, storage, transport and use of renewable energies and hydrogen. The ultimate goal is to develop and introduce market-oriented technologies for hydrogen applications. The project started in July 2019 and will run until June 2022.

          Overall hydrogen concept for ports

          In the H2BrakeCO2 project, an overall concept for the development of a hydrogen economy in the city of Brake and the surrounding northwest metropolitan region was created. The focus here is on port and logistics processes. The concept is intended to serve as a blueprint for the energy transition in other port cities.

          The overall concept of the project funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) as HyExpert considers the production of hydrogen using renewable energies along the entire value chain up to its application. In particular, shipping and road transport were taken into account. Thus, through H2BrakeCO2, the city of Brake can act as a blueprint for a brake on the carbon-based transport economy and contributes to the sustainable design of port and logistics processes in the sense of "smart logistics". The project ran from July 2020 to September 2021.

          Following the successful HyExpert project H2BrakeCO2, a hydrogen test field is to be established in the city of Brake with a focus on road freight transport and intralogistics in the port area. In addition to the testing of hydrogen trucks, further concrete steps are to follow with the preparation of feasibility studies for the conversion of handling equipment for which no series vehicles are available on the market today.
